A Spinning Success: FASCA-SD Performs Diabolo at Chinese Academy Graduation

On May 18, 2025, the San Diego Chapter of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA-SD) delivered a dynamic diabolo performance at the San Diego Chinese Academy Graduation Ceremony. This presentation was not only a spirited celebration of Taiwanese culture but also an opportunity for members to cultivate leadership and teamwork through a traditional art form.
Preparation for the performance began in March during FASCA-SD Monthly Meeting, where members took part in a diabolo workshop led by instructor Michael Chen. Following the workshop, a dedicated group of members began gathering weekly to learn new tricks and collaboratively build a group choreography under Mr. Chen’s guidance.
The final routine showcased both individual flair and synchronized teamwork, featuring highlights such as diabolo tosses between performers and an impressive sequence using a long string held by two people. These elements emphasized not only visual creativity but also the importance of collaboration, discipline, and shared effort.
The entire performance project was co-led by Evan Chen and Elliot Chian, who took charge of organizing practices, coordinating logistics, and supporting team members throughout the process. As the choreography neared completion, members of the San Diego Chinese Academy’s Diabolo Club—led by Evan Chen, FASCA-SD’s Course Planning Captain—joined the performance. FASCA-SD members took the initiative in mentoring the younger students, helping them with timing, stage movement, and adapting tricks to different skill levels.
“The performance received enthusiastic applause and left a lasting impression on the audience. More importantly, it strengthened the bonds among participants and reflected FASCA-SD’s core values of Leadership, Service, Culture, and Inheritance,” said consulting mentor Marian Liu, who provided encouragement, structure, and support behind the scenes to ensure a successful and meaningful experience for everyone involved. By sharing a vibrant part of Taiwanese heritage with the community and mentoring younger students, FASCA-SD members made a lasting cultural impact and created memories that will continue to inspire.
